How the flip works
Two things have to happen. Each character is swapped for one that looks like its upside-down twin — an 'a' becomes 'ɐ', a Latin script letter borrowed from the phonetic alphabet — and then the whole string is reversed, because the last character of the original has to come first once the text is rotated.
Skipping the reversal is the common mistake, and the result reads backwards when you turn your phone around.
Borrowed letters
None of these characters were designed to be upside-down letters. They come from the International Phonetic Alphabet, Cyrillic, Greek and a handful of other blocks, chosen because they happen to have the right shape. That is also why a few are approximate: there is no perfect inverted 'y', so the closest available character stands in.
