Blackletter, fraktur, Old English
Three names that overlap. Blackletter is the family: the dense, angular script used across Europe from roughly 1150 to the 1600s. Fraktur is the German branch of it, and Unicode uses that name. Old English is what the style tends to get called online, which is confusing given that Old English is a language and this is a typeface.
It remained standard for printing German until the 1940s. Today it survives mostly on newspaper mastheads, tattoo flash and heavy metal album covers.
Reading it takes a moment
Blackletter is genuinely harder to read than a modern face — the letters are dense and several look alike, which is exactly why printing moved away from it. That is fine for a short name or a heading and poor for anything longer. Bold fraktur is heavier still, and worth reserving for a few words.
