Characters need jobs

A character's work shapes their vocabulary, their schedule, their hands and what they notice walking into a room. Writers who skip it tend to produce characters who all sound like the writer. Assigning a job at random cuts against that, and forces research into a world you do not already know.

Roleplaying games use it the same way, and so do improv scenes: a profession is a fast way to hand someone a point of view.

In the classroom

Career exploration exercises work better when nobody chose their own. Students given a random profession to research come back with things they would never have looked up, which is the entire point of the exercise.
