Beyond the same ten cities

Ask anyone to name cities and you get the same short list: London, Paris, New York, Tokyo. A random draw pulls up Chongqing, Surat and Kinshasa — places with populations in the millions that rarely make it into a conversation about cities.

For writers that is directly useful. A story set somewhere you have to research is usually better than one set somewhere you assumed you already knew.

What is in the list

More than 150 cities weighted toward the world's largest metropolitan areas, with deliberate coverage across Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe rather than the Western-heavy list these things usually end up being.
